Tokyo shaken by 5.5-magnitude quake off Hachijo Island

A preliminary magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off Hachijo Island, about 280 kilometres south of Tokyo, Xinhua reports.

The earthquake occurred at around 9:02 p.m. local time at a depth of approximately 60 kilometres, with tremors felt in the Japanese capital.

The quake registered a maximum intensity of 3 on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale in Miyake Island and Mikura Island, Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter was located at approximately 33.7 degrees north latitude and 140.5 degrees east longitude.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
