UN recommends that France tackle racism in police
Ravina Shamdasani, an official representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has said that the organisation recommends that the French authorities address the problems of racial discrimination and racism in law enforcement agencies.
"We are concerned about the killing of a 17-year-old (driver) of North African origin by police in France on June 27," Shamdasani said, according to TASS.
She also called on French authorities to ensure that the use of force by the police "against violent elements in demonstrations is always in accordance with the principles of legality".
The deadly shooting of Nahel M, the teenager of North African descent, during a traffic stop in Nanterre on June 27 has triggered two nights of rioting across France, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to convene a crisis meeting with senior ministers.
