US concerned over Georgian ruling party's plans to ban opposition parties
The US has expressed concern over the actions of Georgia's ruling party over the authorities' plans to ban a number of opposition parties, Caliber.Az reports citing a State Department statement.
A statement by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, quoted by Azerbaijani-American journalist Alex Raufoglu in X, said: "The United States remains deeply concerned about the anti-democratic rhetoric and actions of the ruling Georgian Dream party. Statements of intent to outlaw opposition parties are yet another example of this policy."
"We call on the government of Georgia to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, stop demonising its critics, limit the space for dissent, and return to the path of democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration," he added.
