Allies begin discussions on potential cease-fire for Ukraine Amidst war stalemate

17 September 2024 21:45

Some of Ukraine's allies are exploring the possibility of a cease-fire as the war with Russia approaches another winter, raising concerns that Kyiv might be pressured into an early agreement.

Officials are deliberating on how a negotiated end to the conflict could be structured, although there is no push for Ukraine to enter talks prematurely, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

European defence stocks have declined, with Rheinmetall AG falling 6.4 per cent, Saab AB 4.4 per cent, and Leonardo SpA 3 per cent, reflecting anxiety about the potential shift in strategy. Despite ongoing Russian aggression and damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure, there is little immediate sign of a breakthrough on the battlefield, leading some allies to consider diplomatic solutions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to present a detailed "victory plan" to US President Joe Biden at the UN General Assembly, which will include requests for NATO and EU membership, advanced weaponry, and economic and security agreements. He aims to outline terms that would secure Ukraine’s future while minimizing the risk of a renewed Russian attack.

The prospect of negotiations raises concerns about ensuring Ukraine's security and avoiding direct Western involvement in a conflict with Russia. Past agreements, such as the Minsk Accords, are viewed warily due to their failure to resolve underlying issues. The potential for a cease-fire must also address the complex political and strategic dynamics, including the risk of a resurgent Russian threat and the challenge of satisfying both Ukrainian and Western interests.

The timing of potential negotiations might be influenced by the upcoming US presidential election and shifts in European political landscapes. Discussions among allies are split between those favoring increased military support for Ukraine and those advocating for diplomatic engagement to end the war.
