Kanak people raise Azerbaijani flag in Nouméa following decolonization congress VIDEO
The first congress of the International Front of Decolonization, a coalition advocating for the independence of French territories, took place in Kanaky (New Caledonia) on January 23-24, 2025.
The congress brought together a diverse group of attendees, including parliamentarians, political leaders, heads of NGOs, and social movement leaders from regions such as New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, and Corsica — each fighting for independence from French colonial rule, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Due to visa issues, members of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) were unable to attend the event in person. However, BIG participated virtually, with the organization's leader, Abbas Abbasov, addressing the congress via video message.

During his address, Abbasov recalled the strong support of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who had previously condemned the injustices committed against the Kanak people and expressed unwavering solidarity with the colonies in their pursuit of freedom. In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for Azerbaijan's support, the Kanak people once again raised the Azerbaijani flag in the capital city of Nouméa.
It’s worth noting that the International Decolonization Front was formed in July 2024 in Baku, with the backing of the Baku Initiative Group, bringing together representatives from the last remaining French colonies to push for their liberation and greater self-determination.
