Trump promises Americans $5,000 each if Republicans win Congress

President Donald Trump has promised to pay every adult US citizen $5,000 if the Republican Party wins the congressional midterm elections in November. The measure would cost the US budget more than $1 trillion, Bloomberg reports.

“It will be called the Trump dividend. Now, all we have to do is win,” the US president said at the Republican Party convention in Dallas. He added that the money could only be spent in the United States.

Trump did not specify how the payment would be distributed. Any such cash payments would have to be approved by Congress, Bloomberg notes.

In August, Trump said that if Republicans lose their majority in Congress in the elections, Democrats could launch impeachment proceedings against him.

The congressional midterm elections are scheduled for November 3. One-third of the Senate — 33 of its 100 seats — and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be contested. Republicans currently control both chambers.

For the first time in US history, a party convention is being held ahead of congressional midterm elections rather than a presidential campaign, as has been the case every four years.
