Philippines ferry fire leaves five dead, dozens missing PHOTO

At least five people have died after a fire broke out aboard a passenger ferry off the western coast of the Philippines.

The MV June Aster was travelling from Manila to Coron when the fire started at about 18:45 local time on September 9 near Coron Island in Palawan province.

Forty-three people have been rescued, while dozens remain missing, according to the Associated Press. A search-and-rescue operation is continuing.

There were 134 people on board, including 117 passengers and 17 crew members.

The fire was extinguished, but the ferry remained afloat and developed a list. Poor weather and strong currents have hampered rescue efforts.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. The coastguard is coordinating an investigation with the shipping company and maritime authorities.
