Polish FM fires back at Hungarian counterpart over Soros agent allegations
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has expressed outrage after Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó accused Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk of being an agent of US billionaire George Soros.
“You have it back to front, Peter. George Soros didn’t pay for Donald to study at my Oxford college, but for Viktor [Orban],” Caliber.Az reports, citing Sikorski’s message on X.
Earlier, on January 25, Szijjártó referred to Tusk as a "Soros agent." His statement came in response to Tusk's threats against Hungary over its stance on EU’s sanctions against Russia.
The issue of extending the sanctions must be resolved by January 31 and will be discussed at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU member states in Brussels on January 27. The Hungarian side believes that sanctions should not be extended automatically and require further discussion.
Budapest has repeatedly called Brussels' sanctions policy a failure, arguing that it has not achieved its goals and has harmed the EU itself. The Hungarian government has stated its intention to consult with the new US administration on this issue.
