ChatGPT mobile app hits $2 billion in spending, leaves rivals far behind
ChatGPT’s mobile application has become a major revenue driver, generating $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023, according to new data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, quoted by US tech outlets.
The figure is roughly 30 times higher than the combined lifetime consumer spending of competing chatbot apps such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
In 2025 alone, ChatGPT’s iOS and Android App have earned $1.35 billion, a 673% increase from the $174 million recorded during the same period from January to July last year. On average, the app is bringing in around $193 million per month, up sharply from $25 million per month in 2024.
The gap between ChatGPT and its competitors remains wide. Grok, its nearest challenger, has generated approximately $25.6 million this year to date — only 1.9% of ChatGPT’s revenue. Grok’s monthly consumer spending averages $3.6 million, about 53 times less than ChatGPT’s monthly average.
While these numbers reflect only consumer spending on mobile apps — and not the companies’ broader revenue streams from web subscriptions or APIs — they offer insight into how ChatGPT is dominating consumer traction on app stores.
Appfigures’ analysis also shows that ChatGPT leads in revenue efficiency. The app’s lifetime global consumer spending per install stands at $2.91, ahead of Claude at $2.55, Grok at $0.75, and Copilot at $0.28. In the US, ChatGPT’s spending per download is significantly higher at $10, making the country its largest market with 38% of lifetime revenue. Germany follows, accounting for 5.3%.
In terms of adoption, ChatGPT has been installed an estimated 690 million times globally, far exceeding Grok’s 39.5 million. Average monthly downloads of ChatGPT have risen to around 45 million worldwide in 2025, compared with 16 million during the same period in 2024 — a 180% increase.
From January through July 2025, the app was downloaded 318 million times, nearly three times higher than the 113 million downloads over the same months last year. By downloads, India is ChatGPT’s largest market, making up 13.7% of lifetime installs, followed by the United States with 10.3%.
Grok’s weaker performance partly reflects its later entry to mobile. When it launched in November 2023, Grok was only available through the X platform. It did not release a stand-alone iOS app until January 2025 and expanded to Google Play on March 4.
