Ukrainian boxing champion plans to run for president
Ukrainian boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has announced plans to pursue a career in politics, but emphasised that he will not consider any position below the presidency.
Usyk made the remarks in an interview with Ukrainian TV host Andriy Bednyakov, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
During the conversation, Bednyakov asked the athlete about his future plans, prompting Usyk to effectively announce the eventual end of his boxing career and a shift toward public service.
“I plan to keep boxing for a couple more years. After that, I have plans to work for the state,” Usyk said. When Bednyakov jokingly suggested he could run for mayor of Konotop, Usyk clearly stated the position he intends to pursue.
“Look, I’m not going anywhere below the presidency,” he said.
Presidential elections in Ukraine were scheduled for spring 2024, but have been postponed due to the full-scale Russian invasion.
