EU leaders to hold emergency online meeting after Washington talks
EU leaders will hold an extraordinary online discussion on August 19 to review the outcomes of the major talks in Washington involving the leaders of the US, Ukraine, and several European countries on the evening of August 18.
According to European Pravda, this was announced by European Council President António Costa.
Costa noted that he had convened the European Council meeting in a video format, beginning at 13:00 CEST, for a debriefing of meetings in Washington DC about Ukraine.
“Together with the US, the EU will continue working towards a lasting peace that safeguards Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests,” Costa said in a social media post.
According to sources cited by European Pravda, all 27 EU member state leaders have been invited to the meeting.
As is known, in a few hours in Washington, a meeting will take place between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, followed by another session involving several European leaders, continuing diplomatic engagements after the US-Russia leaders’ summit in Alaska.
Prior to his talks with Trump, European leaders and Zelenskyy will hold a preparatory meeting.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already met in Washington with Trump’s Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg.
Ahead of the meeting, Trump published several emotional statements, criticising his opponents and asserting that he knows "exactly" what he's doing and he'll stop the war in Ukraine.
