France National Assembly VP files resolution to explore NATO withdrawal
Clémence Guetté, Vice President of the French National Assembly, has formally submitted a parliamentary resolution calling for France to begin planning its withdrawal from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The announcement was made on her social media account on X and marks a rare and significant challenge to Paris’ long‑standing engagement in the transatlantic alliance, Caliber.Az reports.
In her post, Guetté — a senior lawmaker from the left‑wing party La France Insoumise — argued that the question of France’s participation in NATO has become “more acute than ever.” She described the alliance as a military bloc dominated by the United States and serving its interests, and said her resolution would aim to initiate a planned exit from the alliance, starting with NATO’s integrated command structure.
Guetté’s statement also took aim at recent actions by the US government, highlighting what she characterized as controversial American foreign policy decisions. Among the issues she cited were an alleged US operation against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, concerns over proposed US designs on Greenland, and Washington’s support for Israel, particularly in the context of the conflict in Gaza.
