German chancellor condemns violence against Iranian protesters
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has condemned the Iranian government’s use of force against protesters, describing it as a sign of weakness rather than strength.
Speaking during a visit to India on January 12, Merz criticised the “disproportionate and brutal violence” against demonstrators and called for an immediate end to such actions, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
“We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms,” Merz said. “This violence is not an expression of strength, but rather a sign of weakness. This violence must end.”
The ongoing anti-government protests in Iran, now in their 16th day since erupting on December 28, 2025, were triggered by the collapse of the Iranian rial, hyperinflation, skyrocketing food and essential goods prices, energy shortages, and perceived government mismanagement.
According to the rights group HRANA, at least 544 people, including 48 security personnel, have died during demonstrations. Authorities have arrested over 10,600 individuals since the demonstrations began.
