Hamas postpones election of political bureau chief
Hamas has decided to postpone the election of the head of its political bureau, which was scheduled to take place in the first ten days of January.
The reasons cited include the complex political situation, security concerns, and ongoing negotiations over the second phase of the ceasefire, per Arabic media.
In addition, sources point to internal disagreements within the movement’s leadership regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip. Changes in the composition of the leadership committee are expected and may be announced at an upcoming meeting of Palestinian factions in Cairo.
Earlier, Israeli intelligence reported signs of renewed Hamas military activity despite existing restrictions. Experts note that the movement continues efforts to restore its military capabilities and prepare for possible future operations.
The primary concern is accelerating momentum toward the second phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire (agreed in October 2025), which involves Israeli troop withdrawals, Gaza governance transition, reconstruction, and Hamas disarmament. Intensified mediation by the U.S., Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye has prioritised this over internal restructuring.
