Denmark hopes to find peaceful way forward with US over Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on September 14 that she hopes the United States and Denmark can find a peaceful way forward on issues concerning the Arctic region, including Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, according to Reuters.

“I'm quite optimistic that we can find a way and I think we ​already now ​see some ⁠very clear signs and signals...my hope is that ​we find a way ​forward ⁠peacefully,” Frederiksen said following a gathering of European Union leaders and officials in northern Finland.

Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen have intensified after US President Donald Trump stepped up demands for Greenland to come under US control, arguing that Denmark, a NATO member, is unable to ensure the island’s security.
