Russia open to Scholz’s peace talk proposal but urges specifics on plan

17 September 2024 21:00

The Russian side has acknowledged German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's statement on the need for negotiations regarding the Ukrainian issue.

“However, no specific proposals for organising such talks have been received so far,” said Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechayev in an interview with Deutschlandfunk, per Caliber.Az.

The diplomat suggested that the Chancellor's remarks might reflect a growing Western recognition of the need for a peaceful solution.

Nechayev reminded that previous attempts by some EU representatives, including the Hungarian Prime Minister, to propose peace initiatives were not welcomed by the European Union.

"I don't know if this initiative will be welcomed now or not. In any case, we have yet to see a peace plan or a text of a peace plan," Nechayev noted.

The Russian ambassador emphasised that any proposals must be realistic and clear in substance. "Only then can we determine whether it's worth discussing. If it’s simply a new version of the previous so-called Zelenskyy formula, with the same points in a different version, that is completely unacceptable to us, as you know," the ambassador emphasized.

"I assume the Chancellor is aware of this," Nechayev added.
