Rubio says Muslim Brotherhood terrorist designation “in the works”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the US government is reviewing the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation, stressing that the process requires careful legal documentation before any formal action.
“Yeah, all of that is in the works, and obviously there are different branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, so you’d have to designate each one of them,” Rubio told Sid Rosenberg of Sid and Friends in the Morning, Caliber.Az cites.
He emphasised the importance of following proper procedures, noting that “because these things are going to be challenged in court… any group can say, ‘Well, I’m not really a terrorist.’”
Rubio compared the process to solving a math problem, saying officials “have to show your work like the – like a math problem when you go before court.” He highlighted the need for thorough documentation to withstand judicial scrutiny, especially given the prevalence of nationwide injunctions issued by federal judges in recent years.
The Secretary added that the government is reviewing multiple groups to determine whether they are supporters of terrorism or terrorists themselves.
“All of those things are – that you just discussed, without getting into great detail because I can’t yet, are in the process. We are constantly reviewing for groups to designate for what they are… We haven’t done this in a long time, so it’s – we’ve got a lot of catch-up to do.”
