Ottawa seeks to rename Trump Avenue as tensions with US rise

30 August 2026 13:21

Ottawa, Canada’s capital, is planning to remove US President Donald Trump’s name from one of its streets amid worsening trade relations between the two countries, CNN reports.

City Councillor Riley Brockington plans to lead the initiative, saying he wants to launch the renaming process together with residents of the street.

The move concerns Trump Avenue in the Central Park neighborhood. The street has carried Trump’s name for around 25 years. The possibility of renaming it was previously raised in 2021, but residents were unable to reach a consensus at the time.

This time, the debate is taking place against the backdrop of a significant deterioration in relations between Canada and the United States, including trade disputes and tariffs imposed by Washington.

At the same time, Ottawa residents are discussing possible alternatives for the street’s new name. One proposal is “Taco Avenue,” a reference to the widely used US acronym TACO, which stands for “Trump Always Chickens Out.”

However, no final decision has been made. Renaming the street would require the support of a majority of its residents, as well as the completion of the required public consultation process. The issue is expected to move forward after Ottawa’s municipal elections.
