Israel approves strategic framework for Gaza City offensive
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir sanctioned the overarching framework for the military’s forthcoming major operation aimed at seizing control of Gaza City, the IDF confirmed.
The military disclosed that the “main concept for the IDF’s offensive plan in Gaza” was thoroughly deliberated during a meeting held this morning with the General Staff Forum, which included senior officers and representatives from Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, Caliber.Az reports.
“During the discussion, the IDF’s actions so far were presented, including the offensive in the Zeitoun area that began yesterday,” the IDF stated, affirming the commencement of new operations in the Gaza City neighborhood.
Furthermore, the military noted, “the main concept for the plan for the next steps in the Gaza Strip was presented and approved, in accordance with the directives of the political leadership.” This refers to the government-mandated offensive targeting Hamas’ stronghold in Gaza City, although the full-scale assault is not expected to launch immediately.
Lieutenant General Zamir has reportedly expressed reservations about the proposed plan to capture the city, with sources indicating ongoing tensions between him and Defence Minister Israel Katz over the scope and timing of the operation.
In the meeting, Zamir “emphasized the importance of improving the readiness of the forces and preparedness for reserve call-up, while carrying out refreshers and providing breathing room [for the soldiers] ahead of the upcoming missions,” underscoring a measured approach to ensure operational effectiveness and troop welfare.
