Lithuania faces major power crisis after storm damage

25 August 2026 14:56

More than 90,000 electricity customers across Lithuania remain without power after a heavy storm and torrential rains battered the country late last week, causing widespread damage to the electricity grid.

Rasa Juodkienė, a representative of Energijos skirstymo operatorius (ESO), Lithuania’s electricity distribution network operator, said repair crews were continuing to work to restore supplies.

“Repair work is ongoing. Electricity has not yet been restored to 93,000 of our customers,” Juodkienė said in an interview with national broadcaster LRT.

The number of customers affected by outages peaked at 268,000 on the evening of August 22, after the storm caused extensive damage to power lines across the country.

ESO said crews were working to repair damaged infrastructure and restore electricity to affected households and businesses.

The operator expects the repair work to be completed by August 29, although the restoration process may depend on conditions at individual sites and the extent of the damage.
