Trump proposes "Lake America" as new name for Lake Ontario

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States is considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” citing deteriorating relations with the Canadian province of Ontario.

Trump made the statement on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to do much business with Ontario any longer. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Lake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and lies along the U.S.-Canada border. Its northern shore borders the Canadian province of Ontario, with Toronto located on the lake’s northern shore. To the south, the lake borders the U.S. state of New York.

Trump's proposal would therefore involve renaming a major body of water shared by the United States and Canada.
