US Air Force consolidates AC-130J training at Kirtland

18 September 2024 03:02

Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico has recently celebrated a significant milestone with the arrival of its first AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, marking a pivotal shift in the US Air Force's training strategy.

On September 5, the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland celebrated the arrival of the first AC-130J Ghostrider with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The aircraft was delivered in late August and signifies the shift of all future training to Kirtland from its previous split locations at Kirtland and Hurlburt Field, Florida, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

“Creating a consolidated training location will reduce travel costs and allow for training timelines to be accelerated,” stated a spokesperson for the 58th Special Operations Wing. The AC-130J, equipped with a howitzer cannon and state-of-the-art navigation systems, plays a crucial role in supporting ground troops among its various functions.

Training for the AC-130J will now be managed by Air Education and Training Command (AETC) and Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) at Kirtland. Students initially complete their training with Air Education and Training Command (AETC) at Kirtland Air Force Base before proceeding to Hurlburt Field for mission qualification training with Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), where they acquire skills to operate the AC-130J.

“The training focuses on getting aircrew trained on the AC-130J specifically and preparing them to operate in a combat environment and defend our national interests,” a representative from the 58th Special Operations Wing stated. By consolidating all training at one location, the Air Force anticipates a reduction in the overall gunship training period by 30 days.

The New Mexico terrain has been commended for its suitability for both academic and simulator-based instruction. In addition, five more AC-130Js are expected to arrive at Kirtland, which will bring approximately 299 active-duty airmen and their families to the base.
