Indonesia resumes talks with Russia on fighter deal amid deepening ties
Indonesia has resumed negotiations with Russia over the purchase of fighter jets at revised prices, as part of a broader strategic shift in Jakarta's foreign and energy policy.
President Prabowo Subianto has recently revived discussions regarding the acquisition of Russian combat aircraft, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The talks mark a renewed phase of defence cooperation between the two countries.“Indonesia’s closer alignment with Russia has largely been driven by its recent accession to BRICS,” a diplomatic source said.
“Jakarta views membership in the bloc as a national priority, and Moscow has welcomed this move with enthusiasm.”
A separate source added that negotiations with Russia and China have proven significantly smoother for Indonesia than with Western nations, hinting at Jakarta’s growing preference for non-Western defence partners.
The expanding partnership is not limited to the defence sector. President Prabowo is reportedly keen to boost imports of Russian oil and gas, while Moscow has expressed readiness to assist Indonesia in developing its nuclear energy capabilities.
“There will soon be announcements regarding the construction of nuclear power plants,” the source said, underscoring the deepening energy cooperation between the two nations.
