US unveils number of its servicemen in Europe

US President Joe Biden has written that approximately 80,000 United States Armed Forces personnel are assigned or deployed to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries in Europe.

In a similar letter in December 2022, Mr. Biden announced the deployment of 90,000 servicemen in European countries that are NATO member states, according to a letter from the US president to the speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives.

The US Department of Defence announced in June 2022 that 20,000 more US servicemen had been sent to Europe following the outbreak of Russian-Ukrainian hostilities in February 2022. The total number of US military personnel in European countries then reached 100,000 for the first time since 2005.

NATO noted in November 2023 that after Russia sent troops into Ukraine, the alliance increased its contingent in Eastern European countries. As of November, about 40,000 servicemen are subordinate to the alliance on the eastern borders of NATO. The alliance created four new military formations in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia in addition to existing formations in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
