WP: Part of US congressmen oppose aid to Ukraine After evaluating the success of the counteroffensive
Part of the US congressmen opposed a new package of military assistance to Ukraine after the forecast of American intelligence regarding the counteroffensive of the Ukrainian army.
The Washington Post reports, citing informed sources.
According to the newspaper, intelligence prepared an assessment of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which reached the congressmen and caused controversy among them on the issue of further support for Ukraine. The document states that the Ukrainian army will not be able to reach the "key" city of Melitopol in Zaporozhye region.
Some Republicans oppose President Joe Biden's decision to allocate another $ 20 billion in aid to Ukraine after reading the assessment, sources told the paper. However, other Republicans and, to a lesser extent, Democrats blame the administration for not sending more powerful weapons to Ukraine earlier.
Recently, Joe Biden sent a request to Congress for additional funds to help Ukraine. In the request for an interim budget for the first quarter of 2024, published by the office of the American president, in a separate section "Ukraine and international needs", Joe Biden proposes to allocate $ 24 billion for military, financial and humanitarian assistance.
