American aircraft carrier enters Red Sea

06 January 2024 10:32

The American nuclear aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower has entered the waters of the Red Sea, writes the United States Naval Institute.

It is reported that the carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower is located near the shores of Yemen, RBC-Ukraine reports.

Before that, the U.S. aircraft carrier was in the Gulf of Aden.

Recall that the U.S. and other countries have called on the Houthi rebels to cease attacking military and commercial ships in the Red Sea, warning of the consequences of such attacks.

World's reaction to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea

Earlier, UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps stated the country's readiness to take "direct action" in response to Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea. In particular, he admitted the possibility of airstrikes.

Additionally, in late December, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron hinted to his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian that Tehran shares responsibility for preventing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

It's worth noting that since November, Yemeni Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, have continued their attacks on civilian ships in the Red Sea, which have ties to Israel. This occurs against the backdrop of Israel's war with Hamas, supported by Yemeni militants.

On December 19, the Pentagon announced the start of a special operation called Prosperity Guardian to protect ships from the Houthis. Over 20 countries agreed to join the coalition. It was also reported that on December 16, a British destroyer shot down with a Sea Viper missile an unmanned aerial vehicle attempting to attack a merchant ship in the Red Sea.

On January 4, members of the UN Security Council called on Yemeni Houthi rebels to stop attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
