Egypt proposes dual-track Gaza plan: disarm Hamas, establish Palestinian state
In a bid to break the ongoing diplomatic deadlock surrounding the Gaza conflict, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has presented a “double proposal” during his official visit to the United States.
The plan, as reported by Egyptian diplomatic sources, calls for the disarmament of Hamas in exchange for concrete steps toward the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Abdelatty is set to present this initiative in closed-door meetings with senior representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties. The proposal aims to bridge key points of contention between Israeli and Palestinian interests while aligning with broader regional stability goals.
However, Cairo is reportedly growing increasingly concerned over indications that Israel may soon move to annex parts of the Gaza Strip. “There are real and growing fears in Cairo,” a diplomatic source said, emphasizing the potential consequences of unilateral Israeli actions for both regional security and Egyptian national interests.
The current discussions, Egyptian sources said, are centered on efforts to secure a ceasefire and to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive post-war political arrangement. This includes mechanisms for international oversight and long-term reconstruction in Gaza.
One Egyptian diplomat, who is part of Abdelatty’s delegation to the United States, expressed frustration at the limited impact of international appeals on American policymaking.
“The essence of the current crisis is the limited influence of international pressure on the US decision,” the diplomat stated.
“Washington still takes the position of defending Israel's policy, even if it expresses partial doubts about the measures and criticizes the humanitarian aspects.”
