Zelenskyy: Russia launched nearly 4,000 Shahed drones at Ukraine in July
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia intensified its aerial attacks in July, launching an estimated 3,800 Shahed strike drones and nearly 260 missiles of various types, including 128 ballistic missiles, against Ukraine.
In a statement published on his Telegram channel, Zelenskyy added that more than 5,100 guided aerial bombs were also used during the month, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
The president stressed that such relentless bombardment can only be halted through unified global action, calling on the United States, Europe, and other international partners to stand with Ukraine. He emphasised the importance of ongoing cooperation, stating that every interaction with Ukraine’s allies plays a crucial role and expressed gratitude to those supporting the country during this difficult time.
Zelenskyy also commented on the July 31 attack on Kyiv, describing it as one of the most devastating in recent weeks. Citing a report from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, he noted that emergency response and recovery efforts were still underway at the affected sites, although all search and rescue operations had been completed.
According to official figures, the strike killed 31 people, including five children. The youngest victim was just two years old. A total of 159 people were reported injured, among them 16 children. All injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention.
Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and praised the efforts of rescuers, police officers, doctors, nurses, and utility workers for their immediate response. He described their work as vital in the aftermath of the attack.
Condemning the assault, Zelenskyy said it underscores the urgent need to increase international pressure on Moscow. He argued that despite the Kremlin’s claims to the contrary, existing sanctions are having an effect and should be expanded to target the systems enabling such attacks.
He thanked global leaders, including US and European officials, for condemning Russia's actions, highlighting the importance of continued international solidarity.
On the night of July 31, Russian forces launched a large-scale strike targeting Ukraine, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the assault. More than 300 attack drones and at least eight cruise missiles were reportedly used in the offensive.
In response to the tragedy, Kyiv authorities declared August 1 a Day of Mourning in honour of the victims of the missile strike.
