Syria’s national revival could take 20–25 years, president says

27 July 2026 10:38

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has said that rebuilding and achieving a national revival in Syria could take 20 to 25 years, although he stressed that tangible progress should become visible much sooner.

“In its natural course, a national renaissance takes about 20 to 25 years before its full results become visible,” al-Sharaa said, citing Singapore, Rwanda, Türkiye and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries as examples of places where major national development took decades, Clash Report writes.

He emphasised, however, that Syrians should not expect to wait decades before seeing improvements.

“But that doesn't mean we have to wait 20 years before we see change in Syria. What matters is that the trajectory is upward. Progress should become visible gradually. Every month there should be something new. Every two months there should be another achievement.”

Al-Sharaa said that the gradual accumulation of achievements could eventually bring Syria to a new stage of development.

“Then Syria will become comparable to—perhaps even surpass—many of these successful models.”
