Azerbaijani tourism agency granted membership in Global Sustainable Tourism Council
A significant milestone was achieved as the State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan gained membership in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The decision was formalized during the 'Sustainable Tourism' conference held in Stockholm, as reported by Trend.
Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was inked between the Azerbaijan Tourism Bureau and the GSTC, aiming to bolster sustainable tourism practices nationwide.
Under the memorandum, provisions are made to foster the development of sustainable tourism and implement the Council's criteria at the national level. Speaking at the event, Florian Sengstschmid, Director General of the Azerbaijani Tourism Bureau, emphasized the potential for collaborative efforts with local partners in the tourism sector. He highlighted the role of membership in enhancing Azerbaijan's involvement in global sustainable tourism initiatives and driving fundamental changes in the industry. Sengstschmid also stressed the importance of leveraging marketing campaigns for the sustainable development of Azerbaijan's tourism industry.
Established in 2007, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council spearheads efforts to formulate the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. This initiative is a collaborative endeavor involving the Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Population Fund, and the United Nations Tourism Organization.
