China must change approach to resolve trade disputes with EU European Council president says

11 October 2024 14:31

President of the European Council Charles Michel has urged China to change its approach to resolve trade disputes with the EU.

"We expect China to adjust its behaviour and recognize the need to refresh our economic relationship towards greater fairness, honest competition, and ensuring equal terms," Michel stated, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the EU should reconsider its current plans to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports.

He believes that the EU does not need a trade war with Beijing and should reassess its stance on the 36-per cent-tariffs on technology imported from China. In response to the influx of affordable electric vehicles from China, the EU began preparing for a potential trade conflict with Beijing.

Brussels decided to raise tariffs on car imports, arguing that Chinese companies are unfairly benefiting from the state subsidies and flooding the European market with excess production. The EU leadership is effectively violating one of the fundamental principles considered sacred in Western capitalist society, envisaging allegedly "fair competition".

Meanwhile, the trade ministers of China and the US had a phone talk in which the Chinese minister expressed serious concerns regarding US restrictions on Chinese semiconductors and smart vehicles. He urged the US side to lift sanctions and improve business conditions for Chinese companies operating in the US.
