China triples coal imports from Russia

China has more than tripled coal imports from Russia through the key Zabaikalsk—Manchuria border checkpoint in the first 40 days of 2023, the Russian Consulate General in Harbin has said.

More than 6,200 wagons with coal were exported through this border checkpoint and the total volume exceeded 438,000 tonnes, he said on Telegram.

This is 214 per cent more than in the same period in 2022. The Russian Consulate General clarified that Russian coal is used for the production of electric and thermal energy in the provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning, as well as in the eastern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
