Azerbaijan to lease agricultural land in liberated Karabakh, East Zangezur
Agricultural land in the territories of Azerbaijan that have been liberated from occupation may soon be leased to business entities through investment competitions.
This proposal is detailed in a bill advocating amendments to the "Land Leasing" legislation, which is presently under consideration during the Agrarian Policy Committee meeting of Parliament, Caliber.Az reports.
According to the draft legislation, agricultural land near settlements (villages and towns) in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions would be offered for lease to the residents of these localities under preferential conditions.
This initiative aims to promote agricultural development and support local communities in the newly accessible areas.
The natural resources and agricultural potential of the territories liberated from Armenian occupation are crucial for Azerbaijan's economic development. Efforts to revitalise agriculture in these areas have already commenced, with former farmers from Karabakh making plans for their return.
Historically, the agricultural output of Karabakh was significant, contributing nearly one-third of Azerbaijan's agrarian production during the Soviet era. The region was known for its high yields, particularly in corn, cotton, grapes, meat, milk, wool, and cocoons.
Currently, preparations are underway to restore the region's agricultural prominence. Once the settlement process begins, returning residents interested in farming will receive essential support, including agricultural equipment, seeds, fertilisers, and other necessary resources. The region holds considerable potential for producing agricultural products for export.
In collaboration with Azercosmos OJSC, the Ministry of Agriculture has also created a map of sown areas using satellite imagery to aid development.
In terms of growth, the agricultural sector experienced a 2% increase last year. To enhance productivity, over 3,000 farmers have been supplied with 7,260 pieces of agricultural equipment through more than 100 private companies, alongside financing for the sale of 8,758 livestock. These initiatives underscore the government's commitment to reviving agriculture in the liberated territories, setting a foundation for economic advancement in Azerbaijan.
