The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has released its weekly summary of demining efforts in areas liberated from Armenian occupation, revealing the ongoing scale and urgency of the mine threat in the region.
According to the agency, 1,504 hectares of land were cleared of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) during August 4-10, Caliber.Az reports.
Operations were conducted across a broad swath of territories, including the districts of Tartar, Aghdam, Kalbajar, Khojaly, Khojavand, Lachin, Shusha, Fuzuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan, as well as in the city of Khankendi.
In total, ANAMA teams discovered and neutralised 95 anti-personnel mines, 48 anti-tank mines, and 977 pieces of unexploded ordnance over the reporting period.
Since the 2020 Second Karabakh War, Armenian-planted landmines have killed or injured 399 people, bringing Azerbaijan’s total mine-related casualties since the 1990s to over 3,400.
ANAMA has cleared about 140,000 hectares, but vast areas remain contaminated. Despite deploying all-women demining teams and significant state funding, Azerbaijan says international assistance is crucial to fully eliminate the threat.
