EU urges Azerbaijan to secure peace agreement with Armenia Ahead of COP29
The European Union has called on Azerbaijan to finalize a peace agreement with Armenia before the upcoming UN climate conference (COP29) scheduled to be held in Baku this November.
This push for peace is backed by the European Commission, Caliber.Az reports via the Brussels-based portal EUobserver.
A spokesperson from the European Commission emphasized the urgency of achieving a "sustainable and lasting peace" between the two nations.
"The time has come to take decisive steps towards a sustainable and lasting peace. Azerbaijan should seize the momentum of COP29 to sign peace with Armenia," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Despite the EU’s plea, obstacles remain that could hinder the swift signing of a peace treaty. A representative from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry pointed out that "serious obstacles" are still present and criticized the EU’s role as an impartial mediator.
The Azerbaijani official emphasized that for a genuine and enduring peace treaty to be realized, Armenia must first cease its territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
