Europe's fastest supercomputer LUMI to be unveiled in Finland
The fastest supercomputer is launched on Monday in Finland, it will be available to European users from September, the European Commission informs, Interfax writes.
The European Joint Venture for High Performance Computing (EuroHPC) introduces the latest LUMI supercomputer. It is based in Kajaani in Finland. LUMI is the fastest and most power efficient supercomputer in Europe, ranking third in the world in terms of computing speed,” the European Commission said in a communiqué.
The computer was created jointly by EuroHPC and a consortium of 10 European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Estonia.
“Thanks to its massive computing capabilities, LUMI will serve as scientific breakthroughs, for example, in medicine and climate research, it is the fastest supercomputer in Europe, one of the three most powerful in the world,” said Vice-President of the European Commission for Digital Technologies, commenting on the launch of the supercomputer Margrethe Vestager.
The expected peak power of this supercomputer will be 550 petaflops, or 550 million billion calculations per second.
Four supercomputers are currently operating in Europe: Discoverer in Bulgaria, MeluXina in Luxembourg, Vega in Slovenia and Karolina in the Czech Republic. Several more are in the pipeline: LEONARDO in Italy, Deucalion in Portugal, and MareNostrum 5 in Spain.
