France's interior minister to step down following snap parliamentary elections

04 July 2024 14:11

France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin will step down following the snap parliamentary elections.

Darmanin expressed his unwillingness to join the alliance of left-wing parties and supporters of French President Emmanuel Macron, Caliber.Az reports citing the Russian media.

"I prefer to serve as a member of the National Assembly to represent the interests of my constituency," he stated.

He did not mention who his successor will be, the person responsible for ensuring security during the Olympic Games set to open in Paris on July 26.

The decision to hold snap elections has significant implications for France's political future. The outcome of the snap parliamentary elections will determine the composition of the National Assembly and potentially shift the balance of power. It could either bolster Macron's administration or lead to increased influence for opposition parties.

France has experienced snap elections in the past, each with its unique context and consequences. These elections have sometimes led to significant changes in government policy and leadership, reflecting the dynamic nature of French politics.

Overall, the snap parliamentary elections are a critical juncture for France, influencing the country's political direction and the effectiveness of its government in addressing both domestic and international challenges.
