Casualties surge in Gaza as Israeli military operations continue

05 October 2024 17:29

Over the past day, more than 20 Palestinians have been reported killed due to attacks by Israeli forces in the blockaded Gaza Strip, according to the enclave's Ministry of Health.

The Ministry confirmed that 23 individuals were killed as a result of Israeli aggression, and 66 others were wounded, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Since the beginning of the Israeli military operation, the total number of casualties in Gaza has reached 41,825, with 96,910 Palestinians injured.

On September 30, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted the Abu Ja'far al-Mansour school in Gaza, which was allegedly used by Hamas militants. Prior to the attack, the Israeli army implemented security measures to minimize the risk to civilians.

Earlier, on September 27, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that 23 out of 24 Hamas battalions in Gaza had been destroyed. He indicated that the IDF is currently assessing Hamas's remaining capabilities and dismantling its infrastructure.

The situation in the region escalated dramatically after armed members of Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of residents in border settlements and the capture of over 240 hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation aimed at dismantling Hamas's military and political structures and securing the release of hostages. Fighting in the Gaza Strip continues unabated.

Palestinians are advocating for future borders between Israel and a potential Palestinian state to reflect the boundaries that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War, possibly involving land swaps.
