China builds new super-battleship in major naval expansion

02 April 2026 02:36

China is constructing a massive new surface warship at its Dalian shipyard that is significantly larger than existing combat vessels, according to fresh analysis of satellite imagery and open-source intelligence, signalling a potential shift in naval strategy.

The vessel, initially believed to be a new aircraft carrier, is now assessed by defence observers to be a super-sized battleship, potentially displacing around 80,000 tonnes, Naval News reports.

If confirmed, it would rank among the largest and most heavily armed surface combatants ever built.

The development comes as the United States debates its own next-generation “Trump-class” battleship concept, unveiled by President Donald Trump late last year, underscoring intensifying competition among major naval powers.

China’s navy, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), has expanded rapidly in recent years, commissioning advanced destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers at a steady pace. The scale of the new vessel suggests Beijing may be exploring a doctrine centred on heavily armed, multi-role surface platforms with extensive missile capacity.

Imagery of the hull under construction in Dalian, northern China, shows large compartments consistent with vertical launch system (VLS) arrays, which are used to fire a range of missiles. Analysts estimate the ship could carry more than 200 VLS cells, exceeding the capacity of most current warships.

Reports circulating among naval analysts also suggest the vessel could incorporate emerging technologies such as electromagnetic railguns and high-energy laser systems, although such capabilities remain unconfirmed.

At an estimated length of over 300 metres, the ship would be considerably larger than the proposed U.S. design and even surpass Russia’s nuclear-powered Kirov-class battlecruisers in displacement.

China’s Defence Ministry has not publicly commented on the project.

While details remain limited, the scale and apparent firepower of the vessel point to an evolution in naval thinking, with greater emphasis on heavily defended, high-capacity ships capable of projecting power across contested waters.

The ship is expected to be launched as early as 2027, according to analysts tracking construction timelines.
