Zelenskyy opens door for Ukraine’s role in Strait of Hormuz security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed Kyiv’s openness to discussions on unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, offering to share Ukraine’s experience in securing maritime routes.
Speaking in an interview with NewsNation, Zelenskyy emphasized that no single country could resolve the blockade alone. “Only joint steps can achieve results. Ukraine has experience establishing the grain corridor in the Black Sea, despite Russia’s attempts to block food and other supplies. The situation now is similar, but it concerns energy,” he said.
Zelenskyy outlined Ukraine’s proposal for a parallel approach combining diplomacy and military planning. “War and negotiations to open the Strait of Hormuz can happen in parallel. It is worth trying to find a diplomatic solution, and this could benefit both sides of the conflict. An alternative step could be establishing unilateral control over the strait, as Ukraine did with the grain corridor,” he explained.
The Ukrainian leader detailed the requirements for such an operation, including interceptors, military convoys to escort ships, and a large integrated electronic warfare network. “We are ready to assist with this. But so far, we are not yet involved. No one has requested this from us. We are simply sharing our expertise. If our partners ever wish to make use of it, we will be ready,” Zelenskyy added.
