US to invest $3.6 billion in nuclear warhead modernisation
The United States administration is planning to allocate funding in 2027 for the development of new nuclear warheads, according to a draft federal budget presented by the White House.
The proposal outlines an increase of $3.6 billion in allocations for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which operates under the United States Department of Energy.
According to the document, the additional funding is intended to support “significant investments” in the development of new warheads designed to strengthen deterrence, modernise the NNSA’s supporting infrastructure, and extend the service life of existing nuclear weapons.
The US nuclear weapons complex is overseen by the Department of Energy, with the NNSA responsible for maintaining and securing the country’s nuclear arsenal.
