Estonia’s PM picks candidate for defence minister

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has confirmed that he will propose former Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces Martin Herem for the post of defence minister.

Estonian media reports that the Reform Party will formally approve the candidate at a board meeting on September 15. By then, Herem will have returned from abroad and will be able to attend the meeting.

Michal said Herem’s experience and understanding of the changes needed in the management of the Ministry of Defence spoke in his favour.

According to the prime minister, Herem is the most likely candidate to become the ministry’s new head.

Michal had previously informally offered Herem the position of defence minister. Herem has not yet formally accepted the offer, saying he needs time to consider it.
