Pakistan works to keep US-Iran dialogue on track, defence minister says

09 September 2026 16:35

Pakistan continues its efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran and facilitate a peaceful resolution to their conflict, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said.

Asif said Islamabad was seeking to create an environment conducive to reducing tensions in the region, Geo News reports.

“There are contacts, even if they are indirect,” the defence minister noted.

Pakistan, which has emerged as a key mediator between Washington and Tehran, secured a significant diplomatic breakthrough on June 15, when the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting peace in the region.

Since then, Islamabad has continued to facilitate communication between the two sides while advocating dialogue, de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Asif warned that Israel would seek to prolong the Iran-US confrontation, but expressed optimism that international pressure could help pave the way for peace in the region.
