New Caledonia’s Dumbéa municipality inaugurates Free France Resistance monument

09 September 2026 14:32

Authorities in the New Caledonian municipality of Dumbéa have officially renamed a prominent roundabout to commemorate the territory’s historic decision to join General Charles de Gaulle’s Free France movement during the Second World War.

The site, previously known as the Pointe à la Dorade roundabout, has been renamed the “Giratoire du Ralliement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie à la France Libre - 19 septembre 1940”.

The decision was approved by the municipal council during a session in August 2026, with the new designation formally inaugurated in September, Streamline Feed reports.

The date refers to September 19, 1940, when New Caledonia rejected the collaborationist Vichy regime and rallied to the Free France forces led by General de Gaulle. The decision made the territory one of the first French overseas territories to pledge allegiance to Free France and had an important strategic significance in the Pacific during the war.

The municipal initiative places the episode permanently within the public space, using the renamed intersection as a focal point for commemorating the territory’s wartime history.

The inauguration ceremony brought together civil authorities, military representatives and local patriotic associations.

The new designation also coincides with commemorations linked to the return of the Pacific Battalion, further connecting the site to New Caledonia’s role in the Second World War.

Under the new arrangement, the roundabout is expected to serve as a geographical focal point for future commemorations held each year on September 19.

Debate over historical memory

The decision to give a prominent public site a name commemorating New Caledonia’s wartime alignment with Free France comes against the backdrop of broader debates over colonial history and public memory.

Supporters of the initiative view the roundabout as a permanent reminder of the territory’s contribution to the fight for liberty and its wartime relationship with Free France.

At the same time, the use of public infrastructure to commemorate particular aspects of colonial-era history can be politically and socially sensitive. Debates over street names, monuments and other public symbols have taken place in a number of countries as communities reassess how colonial history should be represented in public spaces.

Similar discussions have taken place in parts of Africa, including Kenya and South Africa, where civic groups have called for colonial-era street names and monuments to be replaced or supplemented with references to indigenous heritage and independence movements.

In Nairobi, for example, decisions to rename colonial-era roads in honour of local figures have formed part of wider discussions over how public spaces should reflect the history and identity of the communities that use them.

Heritage and modernisation

The renaming of the Dumbéa roundabout comes alongside municipal initiatives focused on infrastructure and development.

The administration has approved modernisation measures involving local utility providers EEC and Enercal, with funding equivalent to 66 million CFP francs allocated through partnerships to support local energy-related initiatives.

The combination of historical commemoration and infrastructure development reflects the municipality’s parallel focus on preserving aspects of the territory’s past while pursuing modernisation.

The newly named Giratoire du Ralliement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie à la France Libre - 19 septembre 1940 will now form part of Dumbéa’s public landscape and provide a permanent reminder of New Caledonia’s decision in 1940 to rally to Free France.
