CIS chief signals openness to Moldova comeback
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Sergey Lebedev, has said that the organisation could consider Moldova’s return if the country expresses such a desire, while noting that no concrete mechanisms for re-entry have been discussed at this stage.
Lebedev responded to questions on whether the CIS would be prepared to readmit Moldova by saying, “why not?”, adding that the procedural details would be addressed later, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He stressed that even after completing its withdrawal process from the CIS, Moldova would remain party to a substantial number of existing agreements within the bloc.
According to Lebedev, 208 agreements currently apply to Moldova, including 108 in the economic sphere.
He underlined that while Moldova retains the right to withdraw from individual agreements, many of them would continue to remain in force, enabling ongoing cooperation with CIS structures.
Lebedev pointed to the case of Georgia as an example, noting that despite its withdrawal from the CIS, it continues to participate in dozens of agreements and maintains a degree of interaction with the organisation.
