Kyiv asks partners for locomotives as Russian strikes hit Ukraine’s railways

15 September 2026 17:02

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on partner countries to provide Ukraine with locomotives amid systematic Russian attacks on the country’s railway infrastructure.

In a post on X, Sybiha noted that Russia is seeking to undermine logistics across Ukraine through its strikes on the railway network, Caliber.Az reports.

During the night of September 15, another locomotive was directly damaged in a Russian strike on railway infrastructure in Ukraine’s Volyn region near the Polish border, the minister said.

“Since the start of the full-scale invasion, over 500 locomotives have been damaged or completely destroyed by Russian attacks - more than half of them this year alone,” he wrote.

Against this backdrop, Sybiha stressed that the railway network is essential to the functioning of the country. It enables the rapid evacuation of civilians from frontline areas, the transportation of vital supplies, and the delivery of grain and other critical goods across Ukraine.

“Supporting Ukraine’s railway resilience will help avert a humanitarian crisis and strengthen our resilience under the challenging conditions of full-scale war,” the minister concluded.
