NYT: Most Americans to back Democrats in congressional elections

More than half of Americans say they are prepared to support Democratic Party candidates in the upcoming US congressional midterm elections, which will be held on November 3, The New York Times reports, citing a poll conducted by the Siena Research Institute.

The report said results showed that 51% of respondents intend to vote for Democratic candidates, compared with 43% who plan to support candidates from the Republican Party.

The New York Times described the Democrats’ dominance across much of the country as a “blue wave”, against the backdrop of low approval ratings for US President Donald Trump, whose approval rating stands at just 38% ahead of the vote.

During the elections, a total of 33 of the Senate’s 100 seats will be contested, along with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
