German Chancellor Merz rules out resignation

15 September 2026 20:10

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has ruled out his resignation, saying that he wants to use his time to lead the country out of the current difficult phase.

Speaking in Berlin at a conference of the Federal Association of German Foreign and Wholesale Trade, he dismissed the possibility of the governing coalition between the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) breaking apart, Caliber.Az reports, citing dpa.

“The German government is implementing the measures we agreed on July 1 in the coalition committee. The bitter result of the September 6 election in Saxony-Anhalt does not change this at all,” he noted.

“We are an elected government; we were elected for four years, I was elected for four years,” Merz said. “And I would like us to use this time to lead the country out of its current difficult phase,” Merz added.

Calls for Merz to be replaced intensified after the Christian Democrats performed poorly in the election to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and disagreements emerged within the government over planned reforms.

The chancellor’s standing had already been seriously weakened by controversial personnel changes this summer.
