Wildfire in northern Greece enters 16th day as crews battle flare-ups

A large wildfire in forestland near the town of Konitsa in northern Greece entered its 16th day on September 15, as firefighters and volunteers continued efforts to contain the blaze amid difficult terrain.

A new flare-up was reported on the evening of September 14, according to the Fire Department, Caliber.Az writes per Greek media. 

The flames have reached the slope opposite the historic Stomion Monastery, while active fire fronts have moved into the Aoos Gorge, burning dense vegetation above the river.

Steep terrain and limited access to the affected areas are complicating efforts by ground crews. Firefighters are concentrating on containing the active fronts and preventing the blaze from spreading towards the Tymfi area.

Around 150 firefighters and volunteers are currently involved in the operation, supported by helicopters carrying out water drops, the Fire Department said.

Authorities continue to monitor the fire as crews work to prevent further expansion of the blaze.
