Poland to reinforce border with Ukraine amid security concerns

The Polish army will support the Border Guard along the country’s border with Ukraine, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz told reporters.

“The Border Guard needs to be reinforced along the section of the state border with Ukraine. The service will receive support from both engineering troops and operational units to carry out border protection tasks and facilitate the passage of people and goods across the border,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The minister did not specify how many military personnel would be deployed to reinforce the border section.

Poland has been enhancing security along its border with Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing war, including plans earlier in 2026 for a high-tech electronic surveillance barrier with seismic sensors, cameras, and real-time monitoring to counter illegal crossings, criminal networks, and hybrid threats. 

Recent Russian drone strikes near Polish-Ukrainian border crossings and averted direct threats have intensified concerns about potential disruptions to key transit points and spillover risks. 

Officials have also noted migration pressures involving third-country nationals attempting routes via Ukraine toward the EU, prompting broader reinforcement of Border Guard capacities with military support.
